Sandburg's Bevier

Bevier
Train stop on the way west.
Coal cars, grain cars,
Passengers come to find a new home.
Calm, peaceful, exciting,
City in the middle of nowhere special.
You have had your share of trouble,
Murder on the streets, hushed and forgotten,
Moonshiners trying to make a living.
They tell me you were bustling,
I see that still, in the pride that remains.
They tell me we were different,
People of varied nationalities swirled into one
Like Neapolitan ice-cream.
Refreshing difference from the noise of New York.

…Many years later,
Population decreases, buildings looking old,
Still refreshing, peaceful and calm.
Train doesn’t stop anymore.
It sits,
Rusted,
Old,
Tired,
But stands for pride,
Of the once and still beloved town,
Bevier.
